Castillo de San Marcos National Monument Guide
Unconquered Fortress: Witness Centuries of History at Castillo de San Marcos Guide
Welcome to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States! This imposing fortress stands as a silent witness to centuries of conflict and cultural exchange in St. Augustine. Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore its ramparts and learn about its pivotal role in shaping American history. Construction of Castillo de San Marcos began in 1672 by the Spanish, replacing a series of wooden forts that had proven vulnerable to attack. The fort is built of coquina, a type of limestone composed of shells, which proved remarkably resilient to cannon fire. It withstood numerous sieges by the British and other European powers, never falling into enemy hands through military action. The fort has flown under five different flags: Spanish, British, Spanish again, the Confederate States of America, and finally, the United States. Visitors can explore the fort's interior, including its casemates, courtyard, and gun decks. Ranger-led programs offer insights into the fort's history, construction, and the lives of the soldiers who were stationed there. You can also witness cannon firings and other historical demonstrations. The fort offers stunning views of the Matanzas Bay and the city of St. Augustine. While not directly related to the fort, St. Augustine boasts a rich culinary heritage influenced by Spanish, Minorcan, and Southern traditions. Be sure to sample local specialties like Minorcan clam chowder.
